On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
