It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with others alternatively covering more material or more to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
