Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
